Trauma

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a particular set of reactions that can develop in people who have been through a traumatic event which threatened their life or safety, or that of others around them. This could be a car or other serious accident, physical or sexual assault, war or torture, or disasters such as bushfires or floods. As a result, the person experiences feelings of intense fear, helplessness or horror.

Anxiety

Adversity that causes toxic stress and/or trauma experienced in early childhood can lead to a variety of problems in later life, in a critical developmental period in a child’s life spanning from conception to the age of five. Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity.

Anxiety is when these anxious feelings don't go away – when they're ongoing and happen without any particular reason or cause. It’s a serious condition that makes it hard to cope with daily life. Everyone feels anxious from time to time, but for someone experiencing anxiety, these feelings aren't easily controlled.

Depression

While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.

EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a therapy for people who as a result of traumatic events experience psychological difficulties. EMDR is a relatively new therapy. The first version of EMDR has been described by the American psychologist, Francine Shapiro. The EMDR procedure has been further developed and elaborated to an effective and acknowledged therapeutic method.

In schema therapy the goal of the treatment is to engage in new life patterns. We will weaken early maladaptive schema’s and life patterns and develop healthy coping styles and modes to build up your “healthy side”.
